KMC’s viability ‘seriously undermine’ as businesses fail to pay over D15 million

The viability of Kanifing Municipality Council (KMC) is seriously undermine as many businesses and property owners within the Municipality fail to pay their rate over the years owing the council an accumulated amount of D15,075,153.72 which the council could have use to finance many developmental projects.

KMC Mayoy Yankuba Colley
KMC, the body tasked with the responsibility of collecting compound rates, among others, within its municipality, recently published a list of industrial and property rate debtors who default in paying their rates.
The list includes some prominent businesses and individual who owes the council as low as D11,000 to those whose accumulated debt is more than one million dalasis.

The alleged culprits who default in paying their rates to KMC includes Gambia Electrical owing D112,985.62, Gambia Public Transport Corporation (GPTC) owing a whooping sum of more than D1 million, A.C.E Trading also owing more than D1 million, OSA motors owes D32,921.59, Gambia National Insurance Company D65,862.44, Shydem A Madi and Sons D353,594.30, National Printing D155,665.23, Naning Benjie D84,091.13, and The Gambia Red Cross D223,922.99.  The amount owe by these defaulters are non-inclusive of the current year.

A statement from KMC says the council squarely depends on property rates and taxes to run the institution and provide services to the people therefore “capital is fundamentally crucial to the viability of the Council and this is being seriously undermined by the excessive debt that yard owners and business operatives owe the council”.

The council urges all the debtors to “make every possible arrangement” to pay their total liabilities to the council not later 27th June 2011, “failure in meeting the stipulated deadline will resort to immediate legal action”.
Almost two months ago, the KMC has claimed that Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, leader of the opposition United Democratic Party, has not pay his compound rate for more than four years thereby owing the council an amount of D6,314.16, excluding the current year.

The council claimed that the last time Mr Darboe settled his rates was precisely on 25th August 2006.
However, the KMC’s claimed was prompted by the fact that the UDP leader earlier on also claimed that the mayor of Kanifing Municipality, Yankuba Kolley, who is also the national mobiliser of the ruling APRC party, is using the rates paid by him (lawyer Darboe) and other compound owners to fund party rallies.
Efforts to get comment from the alleged defaulters proved futile.
